She frowned and quietly marched out of the room without another word. He focused his gaze on the ceiling to calm his racing nerves.

Zeke was unsure if she would come back or if she was cooperating, even though he’d said please. Emma Rae’s frightened expression came into his mind. The final three gunshots he’d heard but not seen bothered him tremendously. He tried to get out of bed again, but his limbs just wouldn’t cooperate. He wanted to start throwing things at the walls and windows to get someone else to fetch a phone for him or, at a minimum, tell him what he wanted to know.

But he didn’t. He took several more deep breaths in and out of his lungs to calm down.

Nobody ever helps the crazy guy.

The nurse returned a few minutes later with someone else. The balding man was tall, skinny, and wearing a white coat. A stethoscope hung around his neck. “Mr. Traynor, I’m Dr. Stevin. How are you feeling?” He grabbed a clipboard from the end of the bed and started flipping through papers held at the top of the pages.

“I feel fine. I’d really like to know what happened to the woman I was with at the bank.”

The doctor nodded but didn’t look in his direction.

“Understandable.” He made a notation to the chart. “However, I don’t know the answer to your question.”

“Understandable,” Zeke countered. “Please let me make a phone call, and I’ll be able to find out the information for myself.” The doctor looked up with a bland smile and nodded. “Give me the number and I’ll make your call for you.” Zeke recited their home number from memory. The doctor wrote it down. “Who am I calling, and what do you wish to know?”

“Ask for Luke Benton, and please find out if he knows about a woman named Emma Rae Madison and what happened to her after the bank robbery. If he doesn’t know, ask him to please contact Clay and find out.”

“Very good. I’ll do that in a few minutes. First, we need to check to see how you’re doing.”

Dr. Stevin, with help from the nurse, then went through a few procedural medical questions, asking him about his pain level, his memory of recent events, his knowledge of current events, and many other frustratingly boring things he didn’t care about before departing the room. Zeke did elicit a final promise from the reluctant doctor to make the phone call he requested.

The first rays of light were peeking around the edges of the blinds in the window when the doctor finally came back. However, it was a different doctor. Short, burly, and sporting a shaved head, the new doctor wore scrubs. He strode into the room and asked, “How are you feeling?”

Zeke wanted to scream to the heavens until the man spoke without waiting for a response to his initial query. “You have a visitor,” he said quickly. “I’m not really supposed to let anyone in this early, but you’ll be moving
